Zr2+ orbital diagram?

Write the orbital diagram for Zr2+. Determine if the ion is diamagnetic or paramagnetic. Thank you for your help

Answer 1

Zirconium ion….

Zr ….. [Kr] 4d2 5s2
Zr2+ . [Kr] 4d2

The two 5s electrons are lost as zirconium ionizes to make Zr2+. Then the 4d electrons are lost to make Zr4+ if such a thing were to happen. Removing 4 electrons takes a lot of energy.

The Zr2+ ion is paramagnetic. The two electrons remaining in the 4d sublevel are in separate orbitals, meaning that the ion will have two unpaired electrons.
