PlayStation 3 Backwards Compatibility?

I bought a used 40GB PlayStation 3 off of eBay, and I was wondering if the CECHG01 model was backwards compatible?

Answer 1

The 40GB PS3 is NOT backward compatible. There are only three PS3 models that are backward compatible: 20GB PS3 (CECHB01), 60GB PS3 (CECHA01), and the Limited Edition 80GB MotorStorm and MGS4 Bundle PS3s (CECHE01).

The 20GB and 60GB can play 99% of PS2 games, the Limited Edition 80GB MotorStorm and MGS4 Bundle PS3 can play 80% of PS2 games. All PS3s can play limited PS1 games.

The 40GB PS3 was released in November 2007, and took the place of the 20GB PS3 (the Limited Edition 80GB Bundles took the place of the 60GB PS3). The 60GB PS3 is the most coveted PS3 because it can play 99% of PS2 games. The 20GB can as well, but it is the only PS3 that does not have built in Wi-Fi (it can be obtained with an Ethernet Bridge).

Your PS3 can play limited PS1 games, but it can NOT play PS2 games, and there is nothing you can do to make it play PS2 games.

For quick reference, all backward compatible PS3s have 4 USB ports, all the rest have 2 USB ports:

Backward compatible (4 USB ports):
20GB
60GB
Limited Edition 80GB MotorStorm and MGS4 Bundle

Non-backward compatible (2 USB ports):
40GB
80GB (not Limited Edition)
160GB
120GB slim
250GB slim
160GB slim
320GB slim

RE:

And also, about what year was this model released?

Any help is appreciated.

Answer 3

If its the 80gb version with only 2 usb ports then it only supports ps1 games backwards compatibility. The old 80gb with 4 usb ports supports both ps2 and ps1. edit- But there are rumors of a full ps2 emulation software update that might come out soon. Sony recently filed a patent for one and its up in the air whether or not it will be implemented.
